Collecting data is always an important part of your improvement efforts, whether it in PDCA, Kaizen, root cause analysis or value stream mapping. You can use a data collection plan to get a real sense of what data you need to collect. When you do this you will need to be aware of certain pitfalls also called cognitive biases. These can hinder your collection and interpretation of the data. You cannot fully evade them, but being consious of them mitigates the risk of them corrupting your conclusions.
